Greene County Football: Week #2 Preview

Three games to watch for in Week 2

Waynesburg Central (0-1) @ Washington (0-1) 2A Century Conference

Waynesburg Central and Washington did not get off to the starts they wanted last week. Waynesburg Central lost in their return to 2A to Beth-Center 20-7, and the Raiders have not won a conference game since 2017. The Prexies had a tough loss to McGuffey last week 7-6. They went for two to win the game, but the quarterback and running back had a bad exchange and fumbled the ball, keeping McGuffey in the lead. This was Washington’s first conference loss since 2018. This is the first time the Raiders and the Prexies have met since 2015. Washington won that game 42-0.

Keys

  • Washington- Turnovers- Turning the ball over was why they lost against McGuffey last week. They fumbled the ball multiple times. If the Prexies want to get back in the win column, they can’t turn the ball over like they did last week.
  • Waynesburg Central- Run defense- Last week the Raiders gave up two rushing touchdowns to Beth-Center quarterback Colby Kuhns. The Prexies like to run the ball. If they can’t stop the run. It will be a long night for Waynesburg-Central.

Mapletown (0-1) @ Carmichaels (1-0) 1A Tri-County South Conference

Mapletown had a disappointing start to the 2020 season with a loss to West Greene 43-8. Carmichaels had a fantastic start to its season as they dropped down to Class 1A after being in 2A for the last two seasons. The Mighty-Mikes defeated their rivals Jefferson-Morgan 41-6. Carmichaels had the run game working for them. Scoring three touchdowns on the ground last week. Mapletown got behind West Greene early. They were down 31-0 at halftime. Carmichaels won the last matchup between these two teams 31-8 back in 2017. The last time Mapletown beat Carmichaels was in 2014.

Keys

  • Mapletown- Start Strong- Mapletown gave up 21 points in the second quarter against West Greene last week. Putting them in the 31-point hole. If the offense can score early. It could give Mapletown a chance to win the game.
  • Carmichaels Stick to the formula- The Mighty Mikes had a lot of success running the ball last week. If they continue a solid ground attack, it will be hard for the Maples to stop them.

Jefferson-Morgan (0-1) @ Avella (1-0) 1A Tri-County South Conference

Jefferson-Morgan could not stop Carmichael’s welcome back to the 1A party last week as they lost 41-6. Avella also reached its win total from last season when they defeated Monessen 20-7. It’s only week two, but it’s an important game for both teams. Jefferson-Morgan finished a game or two out of a playoff spot last season. If the Rockets want to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2012, they can’t start 0-2 since the season is only seven games. Avella has a chance to surpass its win total from last season in week two. They will be highly motivated to do that. Jefferson-Morgan won last season’s matchup 44-7.

Keys

  • Jefferson-Morgan- Air it out- Sophomore quarterback Cole Jones had a solid season for a freshman last year. If he can throw the ball with success, the Rockets are going to be hard to stop.
  • Avella- Feed off the momentum- They are already 1-0. The Eagles haven’t had a winning record at any point in a season since 2018. If they can build on their victory from last week. It can lead to success.
