Soccer drops second straight at home

The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team suffered yet another late loss Saturday against Mount Aloysius.

After losing a tough 1-0 contest to Muskingum Wednesday night, Waynesburg had the 1-0 lead going into halftime Saturday on a goal scored by Nate Kummer off an assist from Daniel Hott.

The Jacket defense was under a lot of pressure in the second half, and eventually conceded two goals.

Mount Aloysius tied the game at one, after it netted a goal in the 59th minute originating from a throw in on the far side of the field.

After back and forth action during the second half, Mount Aloysius found its time to strike as Linus Westburg scored the go-ahead goal with just eight minutes left.

Waynesburg was matched up with another aggressive team Saturday, and head coach Brad Heethius knew coming into the game what his Jackets were going up against. He told the team to “keep mentally focused and play our game.” Only two yellow cards were given out, but the Jackets and Mounties combined for 27 total fouls.

The first half game appeared to be even for all 45 minutes. Mount Aloysius turned up the intensity in the second half by scoring two goals on eight shots after just one shot in the first half.

Junior goalkeeper Adam Dolan started the game in net for Waynesburg. Despite allowing two goals, Dolan  finished the game with a season-high seven saves, a few of which were few highlight reel worthy to keep the Jackets in the game.

In preparation for their next game Heethius said the team needs to get to full health.

“[We] need to get guys healthy and look at Franciscan to see what they have,” Heethuis said.

Franciscan is 1-1-2 on this young season. It’s only win coming against Presidents’ Athletic Conference member, Bethany.

Hoping to end it’s two-game losing streak, Waynesburg will travel to Steubenville, Ohio to face Franciscan in another non-conference battle, Wednesday Sept. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
