Pets and guys are now living in South Hall at Waynesburg University. Now a common person who sees this might not see this as a big deal. Co-ed and pet friendly dorms have been a thing for a while now. For Waynesburg though, this is the first time (at least to my knowledge) that guys and girls have stayed in the same dorm. This is also the first time that pets have been designated a dorm building instead of just a room.
Now it’s not like guys and girls are sharing rooms or one room has a zoo with animals everywhere. Just the first floor of South has guys, and each room has been permitted 1 pet per roomie so it’s all in moderation. The other 2 floors are all girls and the RM (resident mentor) is also a girl. It makes sense to me that the RM is a female student since the dorm is mostly girls. The fact, though, that there is only one RM in South is a little weird to me since it is the pet friendly, co-ed dorm.
I talked to some of my friends who are currently living in the dorm about what they thought about the changes in South. I asked sophomore nursing major Hannah Yorty if this was a change that she thought would be good for other dorms.
“I think that if there are empty rooms in girl upperclassmen dorms then they should let the guys move in. I think it’s better to use the rooms than to let them sit empty. Most girls probably wouldn’t care, but they could always leave one dorm all girls for those that did. Overall, I think it would be good to let the guys have access to better rooms and let the university make more money.”
Another friend of mine who lives in South, senior communications major Joe Veneziale, had similar thoughts to those of Hannah when I asked him a similar question.
“Í believe Willy, (Willison if you want to be specific) would be the best for that because you have 6 floors and if you want to separate boys and girls by floors that’s the best way to do it.”
Me personally I think the location of the dorms could play a bigger part in who goes to which dorm. For the students that have a lot of classes in Buhl or the GPAC living up towards the top would make it easier for them. If you have a lot of classes in CRED or Stewart then you’re right next to Willison and Martin Hall. Most of my classes are in Buhl so living in South makes it much easier for me to get to class when last year I had to wheel up from the bottom of the hill to get to class (which I chose to do, but you get my point).
