Danser drops 30 as men’s basketball loses to Pitt-Greensburg

The Waynesburg University men’s basketball team welcomed the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for another nonconference matchup losing 88-74.

“Our preparation as a team, our coaching staff does a great job preparing us for the game and it is our job to go out and execute,” junior guard and Yellow Jackets leading scorer Cam Danser said.

Through the first couple of minutes both teams scored back- and-forth. It wasn’t until the midway point in the first half where Pitt-Greensburg was able to find success going on a 9-0 run to go 27-20. The Bobcats led over the Yellow Jackets at the half, 47-36.

“We did a poor job screening and allowed them to have what they wanted for the most part on the other end,” head coach Tim Fusina said.

Pitt-Greensburg did increase the lead to 19 points at one point in the second half.

Waynesburg did cut the lead to 82-72. However, the Bobcats would be too much as they won by a total of 16 points.

“Our attention to detail was poor on both sides,” Fusina said. “We did not guard the ball well enough to win and we did not get great shots.”

The Yellow Jackets shot 37% from the field and 32% from the three-point line. However, they did commit 11 turnovers and Pitt-Greensburg capitalized with 18 points of those turnovers which mainly was the difference in the ballgame.

Danser did have his best game as a Yellow Jacket scoring 30 points, shooting eight of 11 from behind the arc.

“What I have added to my offensive game is being more aggressive,” Danser said. “I used to be just a catch and shoot guy, but Coach Fusina has given me freedom within the offense, which has allowed me to play more loose and confident with my game.”

The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-3 on the season after starting off winning their first three games of the season.

“The biggest key is sticking together, it’s us against everybody and we need to have that mentality every time we step on the court, especially when you are playing on the road,” Danser said. “I know if we stick together, our offense will shine, and our defense will be solid. I know our coaching staff is going to prepare us the best way possible for Saturday, and we as a team need to execute that plan together. We do that, it is going to be a great game.”

The men are in action one more time before the break as they travel to Oberlin, OH to take on the Yeoman on Saturday, Nov. 22, for another non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
