eHive to hold several events in October

The Waynesburg University eHIVE has had a few events already and has several more planned for the rest of the fall semester. The eHIVE’s first event of the year was the first-floor block party in Stover put on by the Pathways Center on Aug. 29. The Center for Campus Ministry, the Center for Service Leadership and Campus Security were involved in it. During the event, students rotated in stations from each of the groups involved.

“This was an opportunity for students to come and learn about all of our different offices and faith, service and learning,” Cassy Dorsch, director of the eHIVE and Nest, said. Faith, service and learning is Waynesburg University’s mission statement.

In the eHIVE, the students learned what the eHIVE is for and how long it is open, and they hosted a creative brainstorming activity. The Center for Service Leadership had a wheel to spin, and students could learn about different activities. In the campus security office, students were told by security where they could park on campus. The Center for Campus Ministry had lemonade, some activities and a raffle.

The first make-and-take event was on Sept. 10. Students could sign up on myConnect to come in and make a custom tumbler. “They were able to fill the orders of the students that day and it was a valuable experience for students to use a laser engraver,” Dorsch said. “I helped all of the students come in that were purchasing their cup and I helped them pick a custom design for their cup,” the eHIVE graduate assistant Alex Huckestein said. During orientation, they did an innovation challenge where the first-year students had two hours to turn a newspaper into a useful item. The voting for the innovation challenge is on Sept. 27, so be on the lookout for how to vote.

There is a Homecoming make-and-take event on Oct. 17. Students can sign up for the event on myConnect. The students will be pressing homecoming T-shirts. The make-and-take events are through the SAB and are limited in how many people can sign up. There will be one more make-and-take event on Nov. 19.

On Oct. 24, they are showing the movie “She Rises Up,” in the eHIVE at 7 p.m. “The film features women entrepreneurs in the developing world and what the impact of business startups was like when women were able to start businesses in their communities and the impact of that,” Dorsch said.

The pumpkin drop is on Oct. 31. The signups and rules will be available in early October. “You must package the pumpkin so it will not break from dropping off the 3rd-floor balcony in Stover,” Dorsch said.

The Christmas Village is on Dec. 3. Christmas Village is an opportunity for students to learn about artisans and businesses. “We invite artisans, approved student businesses, students in classes, or any artisans to have a table,” Dorsch said. “It is open to the public and there are also a lot of people that come that day for the Pittsburgh Symphony so they can shop before the concert.”

These events and more can be found on myConnect, and students can contact Dorsch for more information at cdorsch@waynesburg.edu.
