Eight Waynesburg Women’s Soccer players score in 11-0 win

Eight different players found the back of the net, with three of them having two goals in the Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer 11-0 shutout win against the Thiel Tomcats at John F. Wiley Stadium last night.

“There’s a lot of ephesus for us to win at home,” senior captain Reagan Mittendorf said. “Those are the times you need to get three points. When you are home, you need to defend. We have to win and make it a shutout.”

The Yellow Jackets have shutout opponents in all six matchups played at home.

Mittendorf, junior forward Julz Mohrbacher and freshman forward Kya Huggins all scored two goals in the win yesterday. Mohrbacher and sophomore forward Alex Delaney had two assists each.

“I look up to the other forwards,” Huggins said. “ I just love the culture of our team because we all are cheering for each other. Simply put, we are very close.”

With yesterday’s conference win, the Yellow Jackets have now recorded 58 goals on the season, the most in a single-season since at least 2000.

“It’s really cool to see,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “We can do all kinds of different accommodations, which is awesome. I think that’s a testament to the players for understanding how each other plays and what each other’s strengths are, which is something I think is tough to do.”

In total, 33 players saw time in yesterday’s win.

“I love that we can see a lot of different combinations of people on the field,” Mohrbacher said. “The level of play never drops. That’s something else that’s great. It’s an aspect that other teams have to worry about because they don’t know what we are going to throw at them.”

Both offensively and defensively, Waynesburg has players at the top of the leader board for not only the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, but nationally for all of NCAA Division III. Mittendorf is tied for first place with five game-winning goals and Lex Greenlief for shutouts with seven.

“Its great to see Waynesburg names at the top of the list for the good reasons,” DeAugustino said. “It’s amazing to have representation and I think it’s a testament to the team and how hard they worked in the off-season and how hard they’re working in practices. They are all determined to seek excellence in all areas of life.”

Mohrbacher is in first place in the PAC with 29 points and with 12 goals. She has surpassed her previous season highs in those categories.

“She’s a stud,” DeAugustino said. “She is dominant, stronger, faster and has become smarter now. She is taking her game to another level and it has been a pleasure coaching her.”

Waynesburg sits in third place in standings with a 3-0-2 record and 11 points.

“This is an awesome season we are having,” DeAugustino said. “We are at nine total wins and in my tenure here, nine wins has been my high watermark. The last time we won ten games was before I was a freshman in college at Grove City back in 2010.”

The Yellow Jackets will remain at home as they will take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. Waynesburg will also be celebrating the three seniors graduating this year with Mittendorf, Mya Riggle and Linzey Miller.

“This is a special senior day for me because this is my first recruiting class,” DeAugustino said. “Those three were the first ones I brought to Waynesburg, which is cool to see them come through the program. It all started with those three. They have been an absolute pleasure to coach.”

The Yellow Jackets lost last year to the Bearcats 3-2 at Saint Vincent. The Bearcats are 4-0-1 in conference play this year.

“I think we had a great response on Wednesday from our W&J game,” Mittendorf said. “I think we are all pretty excited to play Saint Vincent on Saturday. This is a big chance to get three points and with it being senior day, it gives us a lot more energy.”
