Esports clinches playoff spots in three different games

Waynesburg University Esports has clinched a playoff spot in three different games spanning four different conferences.

Valorant clinched a playoff berth in the National Esports Collegiate Conference on Monday after defeating Robert Morris University, 2-0. This is the first time since the fall 2024 semester season that Valorant has moved onto the playoffs in early December.

“I’m impressed with how Valorant has played this season; we had a couple changes on the roster early on and they have improved the team significantly,” head coach Chris Davis said. “Its nice to be in the driver seat to control our future this season, the expectations haven’t changed, a conference title is the goal.”

Valorant is close to moving onto the playoffs in the Eastern College Athletic Conference as well. Although a couple of losses in ECAC play earlier in the season has slowed the Yellow Jackets down, the group is still taking it one game at a time as opposed to focusing on the future.

“It’s smart to keep eyes on the future but staying focused on what is directly ahead of us is key,” captain Felicia Duffy said. “Each game, win or lose, is a learning experience. Every opposing team plays differently, and having the experience against each one is beneficial.”

Marvel Rivals, in their first season ever, qualified for the NECC playoffs Tuesday night after a victory against Transylvania University. The Yellow Jackets still have five games left on the regular season schedule before the playoffs begin, their current record is 8-1.

“It’s a really young team, the way the conferences rank the teams, we may have gotten a favorable placement,” Davis said. “I’m very happy with the chemistry of our squad this season, Noah Reed has made a massive impact since being called up from the bench after the first couple games this season.”

Waynesburg has four of those five final matches in the ECAC conference, and the Yellow Jackets only need just two of them to go their way to make the playoffs in both conferences in their first season of action in program history.

Super Smash Bros. has made incredible strides this season and shown resilience throughout. Waynesburg University clinched their playoff spots in both the NECC and ECAC this week after victories over Washington College and Eastern University by the same score of 2-0.

“I expect some really deep runs,” Davis said. “Senior Alex Sullivan has been great; this is his final year with the program and the plan is to get him his first trophy. It’s nice to see how the group has rallied around him.”

Waynesburg Overwatch is doing its hardest to clinch a playoff spot in each conference as well to avoid missing out on the playoff party that the other teams are invited to. So far, this season has been very streaky, Waynesburg sits in the middle of each conference with a record 2-2.

“We need to be able to adapt; that has been the focus over the last couple of weeks, head coach Tim Nielsen said. “I told the group that these are the teams we train to be in the playoffs, learn everything you can from playing them and adapt to this new division.”

Waynesburg moved up to Division VIII, one division from last season’s National Championship

Waynesburg Overwatch has the expectation of qualifying for the tournament in the NECC, but the ECAC berth is up in the air.

“In NECC I am expecting us to be East Stroudsburg University and Edinboro University though they will be close games,” Nielsen said. “Our opponents in ECAC play are very tough to end the year, I think if we stick to our game, we can beat anyone, we should be able to clinch.”

Waynesburg battles Columbia College this week and then finishes the regular season schedule against State University of New York Binghamton next Thursday night.
