Evans, McGeary succeed at Dr. Si Ostrach Meet

Yellow Jackets’ wrestling spent its Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio for the Dr. Si Ostrach Meet and had two team duals at the meet.

They started by taking on Defiance College, and Rocky McGeary was the only Waynesburg wrestler to win in a 38-3 team loss. McGeary won in an 8-2 decision.

Case Western Reserve was the other test the Jackets faced. Waynesburg was able to gather a forfeit at the 133-pound weight class along with a pair of victories. Case Western beat Waynesburg 38-14 in the dual.

Freshman Seth Evans bumped up to 165 and won in a 20-3 technical fall. But Evans feels the result could have been even better.

“I was a little frustrated,” Evans said. “I had three cross-face cradles and I couldn’t pin him any of those times.”

Even though Evans knew the team would not win the dual because of forfeits, he was not going to lay down.

“I still wanted to go out there and show my coaches I’m still battling for them, and show my teammates I’m still battling for them,” Evans said.

The other win was a 4-0 decision by McGeary, making him 2-0 on the day.

“Rocky’s getting stronger every time out on the mat,” Waynesburg wrestling head coach Ron Headlee said.

The goal for the standout heavyweight is lofty.

“Our goal for him is to be an all-American this year,” Headlee said. “We’re going to try to keep putting in the work to try to get him there.”

This Friday, Waynesburg takes the mat again against the Thiel Tomcats. This is the final PAC matchup for Waynesburg.

“This is the match I’ve been looking forward to all year,” Evans said.
