Feature Series: Jessie Orbin

Jessie Orbin finally did what he wanted to accomplish since he was wrestling at Chartiers- Houston. Orbin has been wrestling his whole life from little league all the way through and now he is the Presidents’ Athletic Conference 174-pound men’s wrestling champion.

Jessie’s father, Jessie Orbin Sr., is very proud of his son.

“I am very proud of him and excited for him,” Orbin Sr. said. “All of his hard work has paid off and will continue to pay off in the years to come.”

Orbin Sr. has been watching Jessie grow up and wrestle all his matches. When Jessie is wrestling, Orbin Sr. feels like he is out there on the mat with him. Orbin Sr. has so much that goes through his head when Jessie is wrestling.

Orbin Sr. said he always is talking to Jessie while he competes.

“Just one more move. Don’t quit. No junk moves,” Orbin Sr. said. “Wrestle your match. Want it.”

Jessie’s high school head coach, Patrick Jennings, knew that Jessie was going to do big things after high school.

“When Jessie wrestled his senior year of high school and qualified for states, he was really turning the corner and was wrestling very dominant,” Jennings said. “With that style of wrestling I was confident that he would transition well into college wrestling.”

Orbin, a PAC champion, has put the time and effort into his wrestling career.

“I had elite wrestling coaches that have taught me something every year,” Jessie said. “In high school, Jennings taught me how to use my whole body and Ryan Dodd taught me how to use my funk.”

Jessie plans to make it to the national tournament this year.

“Wrestling has put me through a lot, I have been putting in the effort to have a chance to make it to the tournament,” Jessie said.

Orbin Sr. said he has expectations for Jessie that is very manageable.

“Always do his absolute best at everything he does,” Orbin Sr. said.

New Waynesburg head coach, Bobby Patnesky believes that Jessie can make it to nationals and has seen what Jessie brings to the table.

“Jessie brings a new level of intensity to the room and tries to push everyone around him to make himself and his teammates better,” Patnesky said. “Jessie does not like to give up points.”

Orbin’s former Waynesburg teammate Seth Evans got the chance to see Orbin’s intensity firsthand.

“Being teammates with someone who was as competitive and stingy as Jessie always motivated me,” Evans said. “I wanted to work to where he was at, would’ve done anything to have him there all four years I competed at Waynesburg.”

Evans knows how hard Orbin works on his wrestling skills.

“When Jessie wants to go, he can wear anybody out,” Evans said. “Jessie has had guys hole would push him so hard and he would do anything to try and win, it’s hard to find someone that will go as hard as Jessie will.”

Patnesky knows that Jessie works hard to make it to the national tournament.

“Jessie just has to do the little things right not just on the mat but also has to do the little things off the mat,” Patnesky said.

Orbin believes that coach Patnesky can help him make it to the national tournament, and with the help of his teammates.

“I think coach Patnesky will help me go to the national tournament with his experience and his division one background,” Orbin said.

Patnesky takes great honor with Orbin saying that.

“We respect each other, and it is an honor to have someone like himself trust me like that,” Patnesky said.

Jennigs is also very happy for Jessie, as he coached him for four years.

“It makes me proud to know that he is competing at such a high level of wrestling and achieving accomplishments like PAC champion,” Jennings said.

Orbin and his dad have a very close connection with each other, and Orbin Sr. has some encouragement for Jessie.

“Long hard days and nights, trusting the process,” Orbin Sr. said. “Dedication, believing in himself. Most of all he must have heart.”

Orbin plans on making that dream come true for the second time this upcoming wrestling season with it starting on Nov. 7 and then qualifying for the PAC tournament on Feb. 14.
