Football dominates Thiel for second straight win

This past Saturday, the Waynesburg University football team defeated the Thiel College Tomcats in dominant fashion, 45-14.

This game featured sophomore quarterback Luke Hudson throwing for 198 yards and three touchdowns while junior running back Carson Shriver produced 161 rushing yards with three touchdowns as well.

“It was a great performance up front from our hogs [offensive linemen] and us being able to air the ball out definitely opened up running lanes which made my job easy,” Shriver said.

Waynesburg and Thiel were tied 7-7 after the first quarter, however the Yellow Jackets scored 17 unanswered points to lead 24-7 at the half. Waynesburg then outscored Thiel 21-7 in the second half.

Three different receivers had 40+ receiving yards, while the defense had two tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception. Through the first three weeks of the season, the Waynesburg defense 42.3 points per-game. On Saturday, they allowed 14 total points.

“I feel like starting 0-2 was a big wake up call for us. Coach Coleman said it in one of our meetings, just because we are an older group, stuff isn’t just going to be handed to us,” Shriver said. “We still have to work our tails off to go out and win every week. The intensity in practice has been a lot better along with getting the whole team watching film.”

In his two weeks as the starting QB for Waynesburg, Hudson has a 2-0 record, throwing for 563 yards, five touchdowns and only two interceptions. He said that these past two weeks have boosted his confidence as a starter.

“Starting two games and having two wins definitely brings confidence but also helps me settle in with the guys on the field and get a good feel for how the pace of the game goes,” Hudson said.

Waynesburg has also scored on their opening drive of the game the past two weeks. Hudson said that being able to set the tone for a game early is crucial.

“Scoring early and putting points on the board is always good but it really helps create confidence in not only the offense but the defense,” Hudson said. “Being able to settle in and have some fun is much easier when the scoreboard is in your favor.”

Waynesburg comes back home on Saturday Oct. 4 as they host conference opponent, Allegheny with a scheduled kickoff set for 1 p.m.
