Freshmen set career highs in 36-point victory over Pitt-Greensburg

The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team ended on a high note going into the holiday, with a 91-55 win over Pitt-Greensburg this past Thursday.

“I feel really good about how we played tonight, they big thing for me is that we were sharing the ball a lot and we ended the game with only ten turnovers, so that’s good to see us not turn the ball over as much,” said head coach Sam Jones.

Senior forward Addy Knetzer started the game of hot by coming up with the first two baskets to give the jackets a 4-0 lead, and after that the Bobcats (1-10) couldn’t keep up with the Yellow Jackets offense. Waynesburg (6-4) ended up having its best game so far this year in terms of scoring output, and the team’s 36-point win is its largest since an 83-37 win over Geneva last year.

All eleven members of the Waynesburg roster saw time on the court Thursday evening, with five players reaching double-digits in points scored. Freshman forward Kerri Bungard tallied a team and personal collegiate-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.
“I feel like over these last few games she’s been getting better looks and she continues to come off the bench and score which is great,” according to Jones.

Freshman guard Andrea Orlosky notched her first double-double of the season after setting personal bests with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The rookie added four assists and five steals for an extremely solid performance, according to Jones.

“She really got after it on the boards tonight grabbing five offensive and five defensive rebounds,” he said. “She continues to improve and also come off the bench to give us that go-to in case we need it.”

The Waynesburg bench contributed major points throughout the game—getting 47 of the 92 points that were scored by the team.

Knetzer finished going 7-of-9 from the field, which totaled to 14 points, and also added a game-high three blocks. Junior guard Julie Deklaven chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Waynesburg outrebounded Pitt-Greensburg by a 45-30 margin and knocked down nine 3-pointers, while holding the Bobcats to just one successful attempt from long-range.

The Jackets also shot 50 percent from the field, including 40 percent from the 3-point line en route to the win.

“Going into the next game against Frostburg State, I wanted to see us keep sharing the ball around and keep our turnover on the lower side of things, but I look forward to the challenge of playing them,” said Jones.

The Jackets play one more game in 2017, a road contest at Frostburg State. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
