Waynesburg University Relations Homecoming is right around the corner at Waynesburg University. With Homecoming weekend also comes many special events for alumni to attend.
“Many of our events this year center around this being the University’s 175th anniversary, including these new events for 2024,” said Maura Fenske, coordinator of Development and Alumni Relations. “We want to make this year’s Homecoming celebration special in honor of this milestone, and provide our alumni with opportunities to celebrate this occasion alongside us.”
Some of the new events include the naming of a classroom in Hanna Hall, an alumni baseball game and the ribbon cutting for the new criminal justice building.
Hanna Hall, room 204, will now be named after the Villacampa family. David Floyd, the director of Development and Alumni Relations, talked about how the naming of a classroom came to fruition and its overall significance.
“Some of our alumni and friends that are interested in supporting the university had naming opportunities on campus,” Floyd said. “One of our alums from 1968, Jorge Villacampa, and his wife Maggie were two of the ones that decided they wanted to do something like that. There will be a small plaque outside the classroom.”
The dedication will be from 1-1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, and will include complimentary drinks, according to Waynesburg.edu.
Fenske talked about the rarity of classrooms being named after alumni.
“This is a unique occurrence and allows us to highlight some of our most generous donors,” Fenske said.
The alumni baseball game will be played at 9 a.m. on Oct. 19 at the field along Route 21.
“The game was the idea of, and is being organized by, the new baseball head coach, Michael Impellittiere,” said Fenske.
Floyd talked about Impellittiere, who was just hired in August, quickly connecting with alumni.
“He was excited to connect with a number of the alumni and be able to host that game,” Floyd said. “It’s a great opportunity to jump right in and get connected with some of our alums there.”
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the new Center for Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation will take place on Oct. 19 at 10:45 a.m., although Floyd said the building is not completely finished.
“Not everything will be completely finalized in the building from what I understand, so there might be an opportunity to do a larger grand opening down the line in the upcoming months,” Floyd said.
Homecoming festivities kick off on Thursday, Oct. 17, with virtual trivia night at 8 p.m., according to Waynesburg.edu.
