Lacrosse drops 4th game of season, struggles continue

1,060 days.

That’s how long it’s been since the women’s lacrosse team has won a game.

That losing streak continued in the 23-0 loss to Concordia University on Saturday.

Despite the loss to the Cardinals (5-1), head coach Gennaro Bonaventura was able to find some positive takeaways from the game.

“It was a lot better than last time [at Muskingum],” Bonaventura said. “I think Muskingum was a winnable game and we laid an egg, and the mentality of this game was to compete the whole game and I thought we did.”

The competitiveness the team was able to exemplify, especially towards the end of the game in its play allowed Waynesburg to break into the offensive zone on multiple occasions.

However, the statistics were heavily in favor of the visitors. Concordia had 44 shots on goal, while Waynesburg only mustered a pair of shots, which includes a free position shot by senior Delaney Denniston.

The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 25 times, with 15 of them coming from its own doing. Concordia won 21 draws and scooped up 39 ground balls compared to Waynesburg’s 14.

One of the biggest things Bonaventura hopes to improve upon in the coming weeks is helping the team be less anxious when maintaining an offensive drive.

“When we have offensive possessions, we just have to settle down the ball more,” said Bonaventura. “We get antsy when we have the ball because we don’t have it very much during the game and we panic. We have to find a way to settle down.”

The second year under Bonaventura, who also doubles as the head assistant wrestling coach, has started slightly better statistically than the first season.

Waynesburg has given up fewer goals to begin the season (82) than last year at this point (88). That improvement comes with a new goalie in net with sophomore Riley Yoder taking over the position after injuries forced several women to see time in net last year. Yoder, who is in her first year of her career in net, has saved 30 of 142 shots, totaling a 27 percent save percentage.

Waynesburg hosts Thomas More University on Saturday in a nonconference game before beginning Presidents’ Athletic Conference play a week later against the Thiel College Tomcats. Ironically enough, the last Waynesburg lacrosse win came against Thiel on April 20, 2016. Start time for the game against the Saints Saturday is set for 12 p.m.
