For the first time this season, the Lady Jackets have compiled three wins in a row. Waynesburg traveled to Thiel for an early tip-off Wednesday and defeated the Tomcats 83-66.
Five players scored in double figures on the way to a 17-point victory.
“It’s just been confidence and a little bit more attention to detail,” head coach Sam Jones said. “That’s really what’s been going on.”
Waynesburg dominated the first quarter. After the first ten minutes, they had a 23-9 advantage including a buzzer-beater three from senior Kacey Kastroll.
The Jackets had a first-quarter lead in both of their last two games. On Jan. 26, they led 23-11 against Saint Vincent and had a 15-11 first-quarter lead in their last win against Franciscan.
“It’s really important to get off to a great start,” Jones said. “You tend to be able to stay focused through the rough parts a little better when you’re up 10 than down 10.”
The Jackets continued to build on their lead through the second quarter. The halftime score was 42-24 in favor of Waynesburg. Even with an 18-point lead, Jones knew his team could play even better.
“To try and have a better second half,” Jones explained. “I thought we left some points out there and gave up some defensive possessions because of a lack of communication. I was definitely upbeat, but just wanted to fix some of those things we did wrong.”
Senior Brooke Fuller finished with 12 points and hauled in eight rebounds. She only played 20 minutes and sat for a period of time with four fouls. Fuller eventually fouled out, but luckily her teammates were there to keep running up the score.
Marley Wolf tied Kastroll for the team lead with 17 points. Avery Robinson finished with 14 and Madisen Dayton continued her great freshman season with 12 points in 27 minutes.
“That just makes us a good team,” Jones said. “Brooke was super dominant when she was out there and everyone else did a good job of picking up the slack when she wasn’t.”
Next up, the Jackets will host the Chatham Cougars on Saturday. In the first matchup, the Cougars came away with a 66-54 victory on their home court despite being tied going into the fourth quarter.
Saturday’s matchup will be held at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, with tip-off at 1 p.m.
