Laser tag held in old gym

The Waynesburg University Student Activities Board (SAB) continued the Homecoming week events with the first-of-its-kind laser tag event.

Kevin Thacker, director of community initiatives and assistant director of the student activities board, spoke about the event and discussed the unique qualities it brought.

“We are trying to be innovative and think outside the box,” Thacker said. “We know that there are events that happen every year, and we still really enjoy those, but we wanted to try and incorporate new and fun events such as this.”

“As soon as summer started, Pat [Bristor], I and some others sat down and talked about what other schools are doing. What are things that students may enjoy?” Thacker said. “Bring them in, see what happens. We thought it would be something different. I have never seen something like this, and we hope students end up enjoying it.”

The event took place in the old gym of the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, where an inflatable, designed to look like a UFO with an alien sticking out of the top, took up the entire half-court section of the gym floor. With four laser guns, four participants entered the large inflatable with a maze inside and dueled it out until one remained.

Student attendants expressed that they heard shouts of fear and joy from inside the maze.

“Dang, people are screaming inside. This thing must be pretty cool,” junior Daniel Flynn said before entering. “Wow! Kevin, you should do this more often with SAB. This is awesome,” Flynn said after exiting.

“Everything is planned for this semester, but if we get great feedback from this, we could see this and some other events that are similar join the schedule for next semester,” Thacker said. “We have some fun stuff planned, but definitely have room to add.”
