McFadden’s free throws help Waynesburg complete comeback

The Waynesburg women’s basketball team defeated Allegheny on Saturday, 69-68, in comeback fashion.

The Yellow Jackets trailed Allegheny 59-44 heading into the fourth quarter before the Yellow Jackets outscored Allegheny 25-9 in the fourth quarter for the win.

Junior guard Kara McFadden a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to put Waynesburg up 68-67.

Then, McFadden hit the eventual game-winning free throw with five seconds left, making it 69-67. Allegheny drew a foul in the final seconds with a chance to tie, but a 1-for-2 trip to the foul line helped Waynesburg reach the victory.

McFadden said that the team’s energy throughout the game came up huge for Waynesburg.

“We never gave up. We kept the energy the whole time while being down by 15,” McFadden said. “We’ve been in these positions multiple times this season, with multiple times coming up short, so I think that helped us stay calm and be able to execute in the 4th quarter without feeling rushed.”

Senior Tori Wesolowski credited the defense to helping Waynesburg kickstart the offense.

“I was just taking what the defense gave me and playing with confidence, especially with the trust I get from my teammates and coaches,” Wesolowski said. “My teammates did a great job moving the ball and finding the open spots, which made it easier to stay aggressive.”

Mia Henkins led the team in points with 13, and Wesolowski and McFadden each finished with 11.

Waynesburg improved to a 6-7 overall record and 2-2 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.

The Yellow Jackets return home for the first time in the 2026 portion of the 25-26 season on Wednesday when they take on Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m.

Both McFadden and Wesolowski emphasized the team’s focus and preparation heading into the rivalry game.

“It’s going to be very important that we prepare for this game mentally and physically,” Wesolowski said. “Playing with intensity from the tip and staying mentally tough and together as a team will be key against winning on Wednesday.”

“Our preparation over the next few days will focus on the details that we need to close in on, so we’re ready for Wednesday,” McFadden said. “The key for the game on Wednesday will be to not come out flat at tip-off and play for the full 40 minutes without getting distracted.”

Waynesburg sits in fifth place in the PAC South Division standings with a 2-2 record, while Washington & Jefferson sits tied for first with an undefeated 4-0 conference record.
