Men’s golf places 8th in Westminster Invitational

On Monday afternoon, the Waynesburg University Men’s Golf team traveled to the Avalon Field Country Club in New Castle, PA for the Westminster Invitational. The Yellow Jackets scored a 350, which placed them 8th out of 12 teams in what was their last fall regular season action.

Leading the way for Waynesburg was sophomore Matthew Karpeal, who shot an 80. Out of the 73 total competitors in the invitational, Karpeal was tied for thirteenth. Freshman Michael Clark tied for 28th place out of 73 with his score of 84. Sophomore Hudson Pincavitch scored a 91, which put him 52nd overall.

“I think we got some good experience yesterday on a difficult course,” Pincavitch said.

Pincavitch listed a few certain aspects of the game that the team did well on, and areas for the team to improve on.

“I think we got off the tee fairly well yesterday. However we need to work on our short game, as that is primarily where we are losing strokes.”

Coach Mike Cipoletti saw positives from both a team standpoint and an individual standpoint.

“As a team, we beat 3 conference opponents. On an individual level, Karpeal had another top 10, and Clark finished in the top one third. Both of those golfers continue to have good fall seasons,” said Cipoletti.

With the PAC Championship approaching, Coach Cipoletti is hoping his team’s experienced players can get off to a fast start.

“Karpeal, Pincavitch, and Ankrom were able to get some experience at last year’s fall championships, and we’re hoping that will enable them to get off to a faster start than last year.”

The Yellow Jackets will have a slight break before getting back on the course. The next time they see action, they will be competing for PAC Fall Championships in Warren, Ohio at the Avalon Lakes Country Club on October 16 and 17.
