The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets took down the Bethany Bison on Saturday with a final score of 72-69.
Antone Baker finished the game with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Jaylen Davis also finished the game with a double double scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
In the first three minutes the Bison hopped out to a 6-2 lead, however the Jackets would catch up to the Bison and the teams would trade the lead six plus times and no lead by either team was larger than five points.
At the end of the first half Waynesburg led the Bison 34 to 31 in what was an all-offensive game, the second half turned out to be quite similar.
The second half the Bison came out hot. Tony Fox scored 10 straight points and Cole Daily scored a quick six to put the Bison up 10 for most of the second half.
It wasn’t until about the three-minute mark where the Jackets made one final attempt to come back this time it paid off, it was the senior Jake Scheidt and junior Korey Mitchum who were the two down the stretch for Waynesburg.
The Bison held a 10-point lead over Waynesburg. The Yellow Jackets scored 14 of the next 16 points scored in the game making the score 69-69.
“I hit that one in the corner and that just kind of started something and kept going from there” said Senior Scheidt. Scheidt, who hasn’t played much this year, put up a season high 12 points in this game.
It was the huge defensive effort of Korey Mitchum though that sparked the comeback with around two minutes left.
Mitchum picked up two separate steals scoring on both bringing the Jackets within three and it was ultimately three free throws that gave Waynesburg the lead, grabbing another conference win over the Bison and jumping to fourth in the PAC.
Mitchum had this to say about the performance from Scheidt, “He’s the best vet you could ask for, he’s one of those guys that comes in and works hard every single day.”
The Bison fall to 7-11 overall and 6-7 in the PAC while the Jackets sit at 9-8 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
The Jackets next game is on Wednesday when they travel to play Washington and Jefferson on the road at 8 pm.
