The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team dropped two games this past week, bringing their record to 2-2 with two more matches left before conference play.
The Jackets played Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, Sept. 11, losing that match 3-2 later losing to Baldwin Wallace 6-1 on Saturday, Sept. 14.
“Results don’t last whether they are wins or losses, you are only as good as your next game and I think that’s important, not only when you are winning but when you are losing as well,” said Head Coach Treg Lunger regarding this week’s matches.
The Pitt-Greensburg match began strong for the Jackets as they took a 2-0 lead with goals from sophomore Matthew Serrano and freshman Sarpong Kwabiah. However, Kwabiah would miss the rest of the game due to a red card in the 19th minute. After the half, the Jackets would lose the lead in the 76th minute, resulting in their first loss of the season.
“When you are constantly being challenged out of possession, it makes those moments in possession that more meaningful, and so when we do get the ball we gotta make sure we do a lot more with it to capitalize on the opportunities and keep them out of possession more consistently,” Lunger said regarding how they can adapt to Wednesday’s game.
The Jackets would then play Baldwin Wallace three days later and similar to Pitt-Greensburg, started the game with a quick goal from Serrano in the second minute. However, the Jackets would let up six unanswered. The Jackets were also without Kwabiah due to the red card he received in Wednesday’s match.
“This week is a big test for us as a team. Every day this week is going to be a chance to show who we are. Not just the games, but the practices and how we come to compete every day,” said senior captain, Connor Jacobs on how the team looks to bounce back.
As stated, Waynesburg has two more games before conference play next week. They begin on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Carlow followed by a home match against Lancaster Bible on Saturday, Sept. 21.
“We continue to keep doing what we are doing. We need to keep care of our injured players so they can come back healthy for PAC play. Our goal is to win these next two games to have high spirits,” said sophomore Zachary Johnson.
