Mens Soccer remains undefeated at home

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets got their second straight President’s Athletic Conference win last night against Saint Vincent in a game that finished 1-0.

The game was very even in the first half with the Jackets just outshooting the Bearcats six to four however neither team had been able to find a breakthrough before the half.

“I think it was a mix of a few things we did have a bit of a slower start but as the game continued to gain momentum even in just a breakdown from a possession standpoint we started to get more and more of the game,” Waynesburg’s head coach Treg Lunger said. “So it wasn’t a matter of if but when we were going to get opportunities to go forward.”

Despite that Waynesburg came out with a different level of energy in the second half and looked really threatening in the final third.

“It was more so about chasing after our identity and for us we root that in a few different things and we weren’t hitting our KPI’s in terms of what allows us to be successful things like shots and crosses,” Lunger said. “So we brought the stats out in front of them and we hammered the guys saying we need more.”

After 36 minutes elapsed in the second half the game saw its first goal and it was slotted home by the junior Connor Jacobs who recorded his second of the season.

“In the sequence, I floated up high against their back line and when Seth got the ball out wide I decided to check away and come back to him so he then passed the ball and I saw Tyler Mohrbacher wide open but over the defender,” Jacobs said. “When he got the ball he tried to take a touch but the spin came off his foot weirdly I just reacted to the ball and got there before the goalie.”

The Yellow Jackets then just needed to hold on for the last 14 minutes to ensure that they came away with the win.

“We did a good job with time management. We held the ball in the corner and kept possession when we could,” Jacobs said.

Waynesburg would in fact hold on and keep the clean sheet picking up a very solid win against a Bearcats team who started their PAC schedule off strong.

“We want to be a team that is hard to play at home but we also want to be a team that when you come here you know you are going to get our best,” Lunger said.

The Jackets have most certainly given their best efforts at home this season and are now 5-0 outscoring their opponents 14-2.

“Finding ways to continue to make this a tough place to travel too is something we want to be known for but within that continuing to find ways to have clean sheets but also put goals into the back of the net,” Lunger said. “Everyone is looking forward to Saturday, another home match another opportunity to get three points in the conference.”

The next team to play the men at John F. Wiley Stadium will be the Thiel Tomcats (1-8-1, 0-3) this Saturday Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. on what is senior day for the Yellow Jackets.
