Men’s soccer takes down Thiel in dominate fashion

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (6-3-1, 2-1-1) visited the Thiel Tomcats (6-4-1, 1-3) and took down the Tomcats with a strong 7-1 win. 

“It feels great coming off a loss to W&J, the mentality of the group was pretty poor after that, so we really needed a pick me up and that’s exactly what last nigh was,” sophomore Zach Johnson said.  

The Jackets started the match with a goal in the 19th minute from Johnson with an assist from senior captain Seth Massotti and Waynesburg did not look back from there scoring three more in the first half of play.  

In the 23rd minute freshman Sarpong Kwabiah would score off a penalty kick, then junior Nick Bryan would score his first goal of the season in the 26th minute with an assist from freshman Josh Smith, finally the sophomore Braden Esbenshade would also sore his first goal of the season in the 36th minute with an assist from junior Michael Kanu. 

The Tomcats would score in the first half and the teams would go into half with a score of 4-1. 

The Jackets would continue the barrage of scoring from three different players which would tally seven goals from different players. 

Defenseman junior Taylor McFarland would start the scoring with a goal in the 57th minute with another assist from Smith to get the Jackets more cushion. Smith would then get an unassisted goal of his own in the 58th minute of the match. 

Smith spoke about what helped push this team to get the win over Theil.  

“Our culture is a big role in the way we always push each other to be better with every game,” Smith said.  “We have team goals that we want to achieve, and that is always driving us.” 

Kanu would also get a goal of his own in last 20 minutes of the game to cap the scoring off for the Jackets to cement the 7-1 victory over the Tomcats. Kanu has had three goals and two assists in the last four matches 

“To be honest with you, it’s always been my family and the team,” said Kanu on his motivation. “Knowing that I’ve got the support from back home and an amazing group of dudes who are willing to push me to be better every practice motivates me to keep moving forward and doing what I do the best way I know how to.” 

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets improve to 7-3-1 on the year and 3-1-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and sit at third behind first place Franciscan and Geneva.  

The Jackets are on the road once again to face Saint Vincent College this Saturday.
