Sara Clegg Head coach Bobby Patnesky was set to prove himself to Waynesburg Athletics that he is the coach Waynesburg wants.
On Nov. 7, the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets hosted the Penn State Altoona University Lions as Patnesky picked up his first win at Waynesburg, 45-0.
All wrestlers that competed contributed to the win.
“It’s phenomenal to pick up a win for my first match here,” Patnesky said. “It is the start of great things to come in the future.”
Patnesky had a couple reasons why he decided to have a match the night before they travel to Washington and Jefferson to wrestle in an invitational.
“I decided to have this match so that the wrestlers can make weight for the first time before the tournament,” Patnesky said. “I also wanted the wrestlers to get the jitters and rust off, also so they are ready to go for the invitational.”
Sophomore Ryland Parker got it started for Waynesburg with a pin in just 58 seconds.
“It was really exciting for getting the first win of the season not just for me but the team,” Parker said.
Brayden Barbao, Kaleb McCamick, and Jarvis Thomas all received a forfeit giving Waynesburg a comfortable lead of 24-0 with Jessie Orbin coming up.
Orbin had a lengthy opponent of Andrew Weaver. Orbin settled for a win by decision of 9-4.
“I was very disappointed in myself after the match,” Orbin said. “I need to do better as top three wrestlers in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. I need to perform like I know how against unranked opponents.”
AJ Tomaino bumped up to 184 pounds and dominated. Tomaino went up with confidence and got the pin in 1:49, picking up six points for Waynesburg putting them up 33-0.
Isaiah Siwik and Austin Fleming finished the night for Waynesburg, both receiving forfeits giving Waynesburg and Patnesky their first win of the season.
The men’s wrestling team also competed in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday Nov. 8, where Orbin placed second in the 174-pound weight class and Junior Austin Fleming finished third in the 285-pound weight class.
The team will hit the mats again on Saturday Nov. 15 in the Alfred State tri-match. Waynesburg will compete against St. John Fisher and Alfred State. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
