Previewing the 2025 Homecoming weekend

Waynesburg University celebrates Homecoming this weekend with lots of events for alumni and a few dedications.

David Floyd, director of development and alumni relations, spoke about some of the events, including the naming of the pavilion at John F. Wiley Stadium and the Business Office in Miller Hall. The pavilion will be named after Ralph “Jake” Porter, while the business office will be named after his wife, Margaret “Peg” Porter.

“They have made generous contributions to the university,” Floyd said. “We’re doing a dedication on Friday for the business office and then a dedication after the football game Saturday. Those are always special opportunities for us to honor people.”

On top of this, a classroom on the third floor of Miller Hall in the education department will be named the Enid Hope (Waters ’46) Crockard Classroom.

On Friday night, there is a get-together for tennis alumni at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility, under the lights, which were added in 2023 as a gift from Mr. Scott Bechtle.

“That is a good opportunity for people who didn’t get to play under the lights come back and play in some friendly exhibition matches,” Floyd said.

Along with tennis, other sports and academic departments will also be hosting alumni reunions throughout the weekend, according to a press release from waynesburg.edu.

From 9-10 a.m. Saturday morning, there will be donuts and coffee in the Benedum Dining Hall. This is also a chance for alumni to check out the new dining hall renovations that were done over the summer.

During the football game, which is Saturday at 1 p.m., Wiley Family Field Fest will take place at the pavilion behind the end zone nearest the scoreboard, with food and drink served to alumni and friends.

“That [pavilion] is always a place where we have a ton of people who will pop in and get a chance to see alumni from all generations,” Floyd said.

As for what’s next after homecoming, Floyd and his team get right back to work on Monday.

“We turn right around and start gearing up for the Day of Giving,” Floyd said. “It’s actually our tenth annual Day of Giving. Monday will be one month out from that event. We’ll probably send out a save-the-date email to all the folks that we communicate with.”
