Softball spotlight #2: Grace Higgins

Grace Higgins, a senior second baseman on the softball team, has achieved several accomplishments in her time here at Waynesburg University.

Higgins, a member of both the 2022 and 2023 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship teams, has experienced significant time on the field since her first year. As the PAC Newcomer of the Year in 2023, she set high expectations for the upcoming season.

“Some team goals that I want to achieve would be winning the PAC Championship and moving onto the NCAA Regionals,” Higgins said. “A personal goal of mine for my senior year would be to get my 100th hit.”

Last season, Higgins and the softball team lost to Westminster College in the PAC Championship. A goal shared by many of the players is to get back to the championship game and, for Higgins and the other seniors, get a third championship under their belt.

“We lost a few seniors from last season, but I believe that we gained a lot of talented freshmen and still have returners who can step up and fill in the roles that the seniors played on the field,” Higgins said. “I think this season will be great and I’m excited to see how it goes.”

Higgins also talked about the relationship with her teammates and how that translates to their success on the field.

“I have become really close to all the girls on the team,” Higgins said. “Whenever I need help or just someone to sit and talk to, they are always there for me. Every girl is incredible and I am grateful for each of them.”

Dilyn Roberts, another senior on the team, pointed to Higgins’ role on the diamond and how she has been crucial to their success.

“Grace has such a strong work ethic and is a great asset to the team,” Roberts said. “She is a teammate you can always count on. She leads by example and is always working hard and showing up for others, allowing her teammates to follow in her footsteps.”

Higgins’ personality is continuously highlighted  by  teammates and coaches weh they’reasked about her and her leadership.

“Grace is a teammate that every team needs and is always there to help her team on and off the field,” Roberts added. “Her personality keeps things fun and she is overall just a fun person to be around.”

With her personality traits, leadership skills, and consistent statistics , Higgins looks to lead the team back to the PAC Championship and finish off her career at Waynesburg on a successful note.
