University receives high-ranking award

Waynesburg University recently ranked in the top 7% of MONEY Magazine’s 2017-18 “Best Colleges for your Money” ranking list. Out of 2,400 colleges that were originally considered, 711 made it to the final ranking. Waynesburg came in at number 170, making it the tenth highest ranking university in Pennsylvania.

“This award speaks volumes on the excellence of the entire university overall,” said Waynesburg University President Douglas G. Lee. “Our programs have great reputations, but that is thanks to the achievements of every member of this institution.”

For judging purposes, 27 data points were examined, including quality of education, graduates’ earnings, estimated market value of alumni’s average job skills, affordability and outcomes.

For Lee, these data points are components of an honest institution. As a Christian university, he believes it’s clear why Waynesburg University ranked so highly.

“You hear stories out there about huge debt loads that students have, but when we look at what we’re doing here, we are doing extremely well in that criteria,” Lee said, “I think that’s a great witness to who I think we are.”

As university president, Lee said he is continually impressed with the institution and its students, faculty and staff. It’s receiving awards like the MONEY Magazine recognition that gives him the opportunity to reflect.

“It really motivates me because I know we are making a difference and having a great impact at this moment of education,” Lee said. “Amidst all of the controversy and debate, we’re making a substantial impact in what we’re doing here.”

As stated on MONEY’s website, “MONEY’s Best Colleges for Your Money rankings are the first to combine the most accurate pricing estimates available with all reliable indicators of alumni financial success, along with a unique analysis of how much ‘value’ a college adds when compared to other schools that take in similar students.”

For Lee, this accolade is representative of the reputation of the university itself, which he personally holds in high esteem.

“Matters like these are what grow the reputation of the university,” said Lee. “That is important because there is nothing better than to have a calling card from a place with a great reputation. When students leave here, what Waynesburg is known for is a great school with a great reputation. People are more inclined to want to talk to and hire our graduates.”

Lee plans on leading the university to more awards by motivating all members of the university to continue their level of excellence.

“We need to keep doing what we’re doing and stay committed to the mission and the work we’re doing,” Lee said. “That is the root of our recognitions.”
