Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket Waynesburg University’s Volleyball team lost its seventh and eighth consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference matches to both St. Vincent and Thiel this past week.
The Yellow Jackets got swept in both games, losing 25-22 all three sets against St. Vincent then 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 against Thiel. The Volleyball team also now has lost 20 sets by three or less points this season.
Against St. Vincent, Waynesburg only had nine less points than the Bearcast and seven more kills.
“Compared to previous games, we really played together. We didn’t give up even if we lost a few points in a row. In games moving forward, we need to just find the drive to finish,” senior Paige Mortimore said. “If we just tidy up some errors we will win.”
Waynesburg then faced Thiel, who are currently tied for first in the North Division in the PAC with a 6-1 conference record heading into Friday’s contest.
The Tomcats outscored Waynesburg by 20 points, 12 more digs and had fewer errors.
Mortimore said that if the team is able to keep their energy consistently, there could be more success.
“I think keeping the same energy and cohesiveness on the court while also limiting our errors and being smart in placing the ball will help us win,” Mortimore said.
Senior libero Macee Cree over these last two games has three digs, two assists, two points and one assist. Cree said despite the losses, she is enjoying being able to lay the foundation for her younger teammates.
“We are very very young and knowing we have so much potential for the years to come is what’s keeping me going,” Cree said. “The outcome for my senior year is not what I’ve wanted it to be as far as winning or losing, but I think it’s important to look at what team culture and attitude I will be leaving for years to come.”
Cree also follows behind libero Jordan Stein who finished fourth all-time in Waynesburg women’s volleyball history in digs with 1,611. Cree feels following Stein has allowed her to become a better leader.
“I think that Jordan [Stein] has been a great role model for me and I still talk to her very often,” Cree said. “I sometimes find myself thinking about different situations and trying to handle them like she would but I also think it’s important to recognize my new position on the team and step up like I’ve had to go from a smaller role to a starting senior captain.”
Waynesburg sits 2-17 overall on the season and 0-8 in PAC play. The Yellow Jackets will be back in action at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Oct. 15. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Waynesburg is 0-2 against the Bison this season, however have only lost each set by an average of three points and played eight total sets this year.
