On Saturday September 30th the volleyball team defeated both Penn State Shenango and Hilbert to snap their 4 match losing streak.
The Yellow Jackets beat Penn State Shenango in four sets. Juniors Madisen Dayton and Emma Hyatt led the team with nine kills each. Hyatt also led the team in blocks with four.
Hyatt said how it feels to not only snap the losing streak.
“It feels really good,” Hyatt said. “It definitely is what we needed to get out of our little rut we were in. It was good for everyone’s confidence.
Waynesburg won and dominated the first set 25-5, then falling in the second 25-21, and would take the final two sets 25-14, and 25-9.
Hyatt said what the team needs to do coming off of these wins especially on the road, since when they aren’t at the Rudy Marisa Field House the team is 2-3.
“I think we have to show up and be confident without putting too much pressure on ourselves,” Hyatt said. “As long as we have fun and good energy good things will follow.”
Waynesburg would then go on to defeat Hilbert in three sets. The Yellow Jackets would not allow Hilbret to score more than 17 points.
Sophomore Paige Mortimore led the team with 12 kills, and second on the team’s digs.
Mortimore talked about what this means for the team especially since conference games begin on Wednesday.
“Winning both games on Saturday was very important in giving us the momentum going into PAC play on Wednesday,” she said. “We experienced what it was like to work together and succeed, which is very important in these upcoming games. I think that if we play how we played on Saturday we will be able to compete well in PAC play.”
Mortimore also said how the team used these two games to better themselves for PAC play.
“On Saturday, our offense hit above .200 (which is good) in both games. We really focused on limiting our own errors and working to support each other as a team,” she said. “That is something we have struggled to do in the beginning of the year. Without as many errors, our offense was able to put the ball away fast and get us ahead in each match.”
The Yellow Jackets get back onto the court on Wednesday October 4th when they travel to Grove City to take on the Wolverines for a 7 p.m matchup.
