Waynesburg drops both games in Coaches versus Cancer Classic Tournament

The Waynesburg women’s basketball team opened its 2025 season in York, PA, losing both tournament games versus William Paterson University, then Salisbury University this past weekend.

On Friday with an 84-44 loss against William Paterson at the Coaches vs. Classic at York College.

Senior guard Clara Paige Miller led Waynesburg in scoring with 15 points in the loss.

“I think I did a good job of getting to the line & knocking down free throws,” Miller said.

William Patterson took control of the game early by scoring 29 points in the first quarter and led Waynesburg 47-16 by halftime.

“Despite the large score difference, we stayed together as a team and didn’t quit on each other,” Miller said. “We played till the very end and are able to see what needs fixing for tomorrow.”

Senior guard Kalista Friday finished second in scoring for Waynesburg with 11 points and led the team with three assists in the loss as well.

“Offensively, I found some success through their pressure on defense,” Friday said. “Once I would drive and dish it out, it opened the driving lane for me.”

In the fourth quarter, Waynesburg had its strongest quarter of the game, scoring 22 points and going five for 12 on field goals.

“We aren’t going to dwell on this loss,” Miller said.

Friday said that the team has to keep on moving forward as they look to continue non-conference play.

“Personally, it’s the first game,” Friday said. “It’s unfortunate we started off this way, but everyone on this team knows it’s a long season and you have to keep your mind in a good place to bounce back and get ready for the next one.”

Following a loss to William Paterson on Friday, the Waynesburg women’s basketball team battled against Salisbury University, falling just short of victory, with a final score of 76-70.

“We gave up too many second chance points,” head coach Sam Jones said. “It was 13-0 [in terms of] second chance points for the game.”

Along with the second chance points, some issues defensively and turnovers were a factor in the outcome as well.

Waynesburg finished with 17 turnovers in the game, while Salisbury finished with 13.

This is where Salisbury could run out in transition and get looks at the rim, finishing with 16 points off turnovers.

“We had some turnovers at bad times,” Jones said. “That kind of gave them momentum.”

However, Waynesburg did have a few bright spots in terms of offensive fire power, having two players in double figures.

Friday led the charge with 23 points on 8/14 from the field and burying two-three pointers as well. Friday also made the Coaches verses Cancer Classic Tournament All-Tournament team.

Junior guard Kara McFadden also had 20 points converting on nine of 18 from the field with two-three pointers as well.

The women’s basketball team finds their way back to the court on Tuesday Nov. 18 in Pittsburgh, PA against non-conference opponent Carlow University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
