On Saturday, the Waynesburg University’s volleyball team traveled to Meadville, PA to open up Presidents’ Athletic Conference play but fell to Allegheny in three sets.
Head coach Hope Johnston says that the team’s mentality heading into conference play is to just play their game with confidence.
“ I think the team mentality is that we can beat any given team on any given day if we show up and play to the best of our abilities,” Johnston said. “We are prepared and we continue to get better, so it should be no different going into the PAC.”
Waynesburg fell in the first set to Allegheny 25-15, and lost sets two and three 25-15.
Sophomore Kristina Zadrozny led Waynesburg with seven kills and junior Riley Ruffley led the team with nine digs.
Zadrozny says that the team’s biggest takeaway from the loss is to play with consistency.
“I think we need to learn consistency,” Zadrozny said. “We are a good team and it has shown before, but sometimes we don’t perform to our full potential.”
Zadrozny believes that with hard work, the team can win games and prepare themselves for their next conference game against Thiel.
“We all want to win, and play to the level we know how to play too,” Zadrozny said. “I think we’re going to work hard and it will show in the next few games, and hopefully we can take a win from Thiel.”
Ruffley says that with hard work, the team can take it one game at a time and work their way to achieving their long term goals this season.
“Overall, we are going to go back to the basics and the way we play the game,” Ruffley said. “We have our long-term goals for the season, but in order to get there we have to work in small increments to get to those bigger goals.”
Waynesburg’s next game is on Wednesday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse when the Yellow Jackets take on Pitt-Greensburg. The match starts at 7 p.m.
