Waynesburg University’s first experience fair was held in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Thursday, Sept. 19, for all freshmen taking a Fiat Lux class to connect with classmates.
Samantha Pete, who serves as the academic services coordinator, said that she was excited to see all of the students attending the event for either their Fiat Lux class, or just to see the event.
“The general amount of people that attended was expected, since the event was required for all Fiat Lux courses and students,” Pete said. “Though, we were also glad to see that a few additional students and faculty that weren’t required to attend stopped by as well.”
The event had many different activities for freshmen to participate in, such as a career closet outfit challenge, a counseling center cup balance challenge and a Waynesburg University guess who game.
Sarah Bell, who serves as the director of the Pathways Center, spoke about what the Experience Fair had to offer to the students.
“Some tables focused on giving out resources, while others were DIY stations or WU-themed games,” Bell said. “Students had the opportunity to connect with WU employees, engage in activities and learn more about campus at the Waynesburg Experience Fair.”
Bell also discussed the number of students who attended the event, and if she expected to have the amount of students that participated.
“This was the first time we have hosted the Waynesburg Experience Fair, so it was hard to know how many students to expect,” Bell said. “We ended up having 238 students check in at the event. I was hoping for at least 200, so I’m happy with the turnout overall.”
Pete also said that all the students really enjoyed going to the event.
“From the exit survey that we conducted, 97% of respondents said that they agreed or strongly agreed that the event was helpful for first-year students,” Pete said.
Freshman Olivia Mohney said that the event is beneficial to her because of the opportunities she can get involved with on campus.
“It’s a great way to get to know people and find out about different organizations you may want to join.”
Freshman Madelyn Schnore said that she learned a lot of different things about campus at the event.
“I learned a lot about where things were, and clubs I didn’t know existed,” Schnore said. “I also had a good time roaming around and making some new friends.”
Schnore also said that she benefited from the event and would go to another event like this in the future.
“To me, I believe it was beneficial because I learned things I need to succeed and maneuver through campus,” Schnore said. “If I didn’t go, I wouldn’t have known about the resources I have or where these resources are located.”
