The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team was in action against Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponent Franciscan university on Thursday, Oct. 12. The match did not fall in the Yellow Jackets favor however, as the Barons won 8-1.
After their match, Head Coach Randy Petit stated, “ I thought the girls played hard against a very talented team.”
“I was pleased to see the team do their best, but also, just to say goodbye to the fall season. I’m very much a sentimental person, so saying how much I enjoyed playing with everyone and my teammates has already been said 100 times,” said Karly Starcher on what she was pleased to see the team do in the final match of the season.
Although the match was one sided, sophomore Alli Bailey put up a tremendous fight and pulled out a big victory in her last singles match of the fall season.
Bailey played fifth singles and won the only point of the day for the Yellow Jackets as she beat her respective opponent 6-2, 6-3.
After Bailey’s win, she stated, “I think my positive attitude put me ahead of my opponent.”
Petit stated, “Alli played really well. She limited her mistakes and she was able to take advantage of her opponents’ errors. She played a very consistent match.”
Although the season was not how they would have hoped, their attitude heading into their last match was still strong, “I treated it like any other match. I just played how I normally do, hoped for the best, and had fun.” Bailey said.
Petit stated, “Our season is condensed and it can be grueling with multiple matches in a week. They played hard and I appreciate their effort. I look forward to working with them for their non-traditional season in the spring,” on what the team showed mentally in the last match of the season.
The Yellow Jackets finished the season 1-9 overall and 0-8 in conference play this season, as they look to get back in action in the spring when they play Mount Aloysius College on March 23.
