Two weeks ago, ended a bizarre week in the National Basketball Association and marked the end of the most blockbuster trade deadline in NBA history. From Feb. 1 to Feb. 6, 21 trades were completed; some of them were good trades, some were bad trades, and others no one expected to be completed.
One those trades that no one expected occurred just after midnight on the east coast on Sunday, Feb. 1, as the Los Angeles Lakers acquired the 25 year-old ‘‘global superstar’’ Luka Dončić, Markieff Morris and Maxi Kleber from the Dallas Mavericks for 32 year-old superstar Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick in a three team trade that included the Utah Jazz.
Normally when a deal of this magnitude happens there would be rumors or talks going on publicly leading up to the trade because the players on both teams would know. For example, De’Aaron Fox was traded to the San Antonio Spurs about 18 hours after the Luka-AD trade. Leading up to the trade, there were rumors that he preferred to be traded to the Spurs. And both teams would only have to find a way to get the trade completed.
In the Luka-AD trade case, there were also rumors going around that nobody other than the General managers knew that this trade was going to happen. There were reports that Lakers forward LeBron James was having dinner with his family when the trade occurred because the Lakers had just finished beating the New York Knicks that night.
“I was shocked…I was sitting at home watching a movie with my wife. Then I got the call,” said Davis in a pregame interview on ESPN before the Mavericks game on Tuesday, Feb. 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers. “I had no idea…I just sent the team[Lakers] a text congratulating them on the win against the Knicks…then found out an hour later I was no longer with the team.”
This trade had so much buzz that there were videos of NBA players reacting to it while sitting on the bench during their games. NFL players were posting on their social media’s asking questions, MLB players were trying to analyze what the trade meant in their terms and it even had the disgusted reactions from the family members of the players involved.
“But I think that exactly this secrecy, or should I say from some individuals, maybe even hypocrisy, this hurts me personally,” said Dončić’s father, Sasa on Arena Sport network from his home in Slovenia. “Because I think that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this.”
It was interesting to see that the Mavericks would move on from their young star who recently just took them to the NBA finals just last year for an older player who is a star, but he is not the player the Dallas fan base had thought they would have for the next few years.
Now that this trade happened, what does this mean for the future of the NBA? Does this trade show that star players can be moved at any time?
