Women’s Basketball hoping to improve defense in 2025-26

Defense is the name of the game; in order to win, you have to stop the opponent from  scoring. This is something that the Waynesburg Women’s Basketball team will be looking forward to doing soon.

“Consistency on defense,” head coach Sam Jones said. “We are breaking it down into smaller chunks to work on it every day.”

With the season nearing, dialing in on fixing the small issues to perfect a defense is normal. However, nothing will ever be perfect, but greatness can come to those who want it.

Multiple players looking to better their defense over the offseason, including senior point guard Madison Platt.

“I would say defense is probably one of my biggest things,” Platt said. “That is one of the things I needed to work on, and that I have been improving on.

Coming off a scrimmage against an opponent not named, Jones liked what he saw, but it was not perfect.

“I’ll give us a B-; we did a lot of things well,” Jones said. “There are some things that annoy me, but I am a perfectionist, so I am trying to be a little nicer.”

The Yellow Jackets, looking to improve upon their last season, have returned all five starters. Being able to return veteran leadership may help the Yellow Jackets a lot.

While not all returners start, the Yellow Jackets are building a culture. Creating bonds on and off the court to help the playing environment and much more. Veterans are looking to  build this and continue this beyond their years.

“I would say just to do your best no matter what,” Platt said. “If the upper classmen are  trying to help you, then just listen to them.”

Bonding and chemistry picks up where talent will leave you. A team could have all the talent, but if they do not mesh well, they will not succeed to their highest potential.

Having experienced this throughout her freshman and sophomore years, Platt is looking to continue the growth in their bond as a team.

“My freshman and sophomore years, we did not bond on or off the court well,”  Platt said. “Now we all bond together; we all get along together very well.”

Building upon last season with chemistry and defense being the centerpiece, the Yellow Jackets seek success. They will be in action soon on Nov. 14 when they battle William Patterson at York College.
