On Wednesday, the women’s basketball team lost to conference rival Washington and Jefferson 77-51.
Mia Henkins led the way for the Lady J’s with 15 points, and sophomore Julz Mohrbacher was second with eight points and eight rebounds.
At the end of the first quarter the Presidents led by six points. Moving into the second, the Presidents increased their lead by 14 at the six minute 26 second mark. Waynesburg would cut that lead down by 10, however it wasn’t enough.
“We couldn’t seem to find our rhythm to get things going,” freshman Kalista Friday said. “Against good teams you have to come out ready to play.”
Despite the loss, Friday mentioned what the Yellow Jackets were able to do in the game.
“We never gave up on each other and continued to battle, which is one positive, but we just have to bounce back and get ready for our next one Saturday.”
This season has shown that the future is bright for the lady Yellow Jackets and Friday has been one of those bright spots.
Friday averages 22.9 minutes per game, shoots 40% from the floor and 41% outside the arc. She also averages the most points and the third most rebounds per game.
“I put in a lot of work this summer so when it shows during the games it makes the work feel worth it,” Friday said. “I’m never really content with myself and with the performance at W&J that shows there is always room for improvement.”
The team also has doubled its win total from last season and statistically is doing better.
“All I can say is that the future is looking promising,” Mohrbacher said. “We have a lot of potential to be successful in future seasons because we have such young talent.”
Mohrbacher said what she thinks the team has to do in order to win their fifth game of the season against the Bearcats.
“Improve on all aspects, have a complete game, bring the energy we had for Bethany, and go in there ready to get a win while working on both ends.”
The lady Yellow Jackets are back in action on the road Saturday when they travel to St. Vincent with tip off being at 4 p.m.
