Women’s Soccer Begins PAC Play

The Waynesburg University women’s soccer team battled for its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game against the Barons yesterday.

After no action in the first half, it was 0-0 at the 68th minute. Senior midfielder Kate James puts her hand up as she prepares to take the corner kick for the Yellow Jackets.

The kick is on her way fellow senior Madey Hill gets a piece of it and it trickles into the back of the net for a 1-0 against the Franciscan Barons.

It was a defensive battle until Hill was able to get a piece of one off a corner to get the first and only goal of the game.

“It was an awesome feeling, there was another corner kick opportunity earlier in the game that I had missed so to be able to bury that one was great,” said Hill.

With that win this is the first time ever that the Yellow Jackets have won in Steubenville, Ohio against the Barons in program history.

“I am proud of the group, it was a good ball and a great finish,” said women’s soccer head coach George DeAugustino.

With that win, the women’s team is in a five-way tie for first as they are 1-0 with three points.

After the victory fifth year defender Courtney Grove talked to DeAugustino and said, “That is why I came back, for these types of games.”

Freshman goalkeeper Alexus Greenlief was able to produce her first ever PAC and collegiate shutout while making some key saves to secure the win.

“Greenlief was incredible today with big saves and she is continuing to have good growth,” said DeAugustino.

Former player and now assistant coach Emily Redman said, “they have been working all season, the energy was great, and we wanted to punch first.”

DeAugustino said, “I know you are asking for two stars of the game but I am going to have to take three stars like hockey does and give them to Greenlief, Hill and James.”

The team’s next game will be played on Sept. 23 at John F. Wiley Stadium against the Chatham Cougars kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.

“We have to clean up some touches and stay sharp as we prepare for the upcoming games,” said Redman.
