Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Women’s soccer team celebrated its senior night in dramatic fashion against Saint Vincent, winning 2-1 on a Julz Mohrbacher header in the 89th minute on Saturday, Oct. 11.
“It was a great day to be a Jacket,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “We got to celebrate our seniors and give them a big win in conference play at our place.”
Coming into the game, the Saint Vincent Bearcats were 4-0-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with 13 points and the only team to have 10 total wins.
In the third minute, sophomore midfielder Brynn Kirby gave Waynesburg an early 1-0 lead on a pass by senior captain Reagan Mittendorf on a corner kick.
“It was really all a blur,” Kirby said. “I knew the one thing I wanted to do was hunt the ball and that was my main goal.”
This the first collegiate goal for Kirby who grew up in the borough of Waynesburg.
“It’s something really special,” Kirby said. “It was a big jump from Waynesburg Central to the University. Just being able to make an impact is something really special and that my parents were there to see, which was really nice.
At the half, the Yellow Jackets led with six shots to the Bearcats two. Both teams had three cornerkicks.
Saint Vincent tied the game up on a Jordan Kirkwood shot to the back of the net in the 49th minute. Elizzabeth Wilson had the assist.
In the final minute of the game, Mittendorf connected with Mohrbacher on a corner kick to give Waynesburg the 2-1 lead.
“We knew those were the moments to capitalize on,” Mittendorf said. “I was focused on getting the ball in and luckily Julz was on the other end of it, which was incredible.”
Waynesburg is in third place in the conference now with a 4-0-2 record and 14 points. This was the seventh win at home for the Yellow Jackets.
The senior captains, Mya Riggle, Linzey Miller and Mittendorf were honored before the game for senior recognition day.
“They made senior day really special,” Mittendorf said. “The win was the cherry on top, especially because of how we lost to them last. It was a really good day to end it with a win.”
Mittendorf expressed how she was grateful for the people who helped through her journey with soccer.
“I have to thank Coach DeAugustino,” Mittendorf said. “He’s pushed me to be a better person. I want to also thank my parents because they have always uplifted me and given me the confidence that I have today.”
The Yellow Jackets will remain at John F. Wiley Stadium as the Chatham Cougars come to Waynesburg on Wednesday, Oct. 15th. Game time is 8 p.m.
