Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets women’s soccer team lost to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats, 1-0, yesterday afternoon.
“This team hates losing,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “It’s never easy to come off the pitch like that.”
In the game, the Yellow Jackets had ten shots, four of which were shots on goal.
“We learn that we have to execute when we get our chances,” DeAugustino said. “We’re not gonna get 100 chances a game. We might only get one or two.”
In the 7th minute, Julz Mohrbacher jumped up to get a header, but the shot ricocheted off the right goal post.
“Not all of our games are gonna be easy,” Mohrbacher said. “I’m not too stressed about it. I think that it’s something some of our young players can turn this into a learning moment. We can still continue to move forward from this and win.”
The game was scoreless at the half. Goalkeeper Alexis Greenlief had three saves in the first half, keeping the shutout streak alive.
“I thought we played pretty well in the second half,” DeAugustino said. “That’s just soccer.”
In the 73rd minute, Pitt-Greensburg scored the lone goal of the game. The ball popped up in the air after hitting the left corner post and fell into the hands of Greenlief, but got headed in by a Bobcat.
“We lacked execution in that final third and I thought our defense played well in the first and second half,” DeAugustino said.
Waynesburg had six of the nine corner shots and outshot Pitt-Greensburg, 10-5.
“It’s just that kind of sport where you could play well and have a lot of statistical categories be in your favor, but only one matters and that’s the scoreboard,” DeAugustino said.
The Yellow Jackets now are 4-1 and have a quick turnaround, traveling to Baldwin Wallace on Friday night. Last season, Waynesburg lost to Baldwin Wallace 2-1 on Sept. 14 at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Mohrbacher knows the history between the two Yellow Jackets teams and left with a simple message for Friday.
“I just want to beat them,” Mohrbacher said. “We have given them some really good games, but yet to come out on top. It would be a really good way to prepare us for PAC play.”
