Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team beat Baldwin Wallace University for the first time in program history, shutting them out 1-0.
“I think a lot of us felt very chipped by that Greensburg game,” senior captain Reagan Mittendorf said. “So we came out to Baldwin Wallace with a lot more intensity then with the previous game. I wanted to beat them for so long.”
Waynesburg was shut out in the last game against Pitt-Greensburg. Head coach George DeAugustino reflected on that game and went to Baldwin Wallace with a plan.
“We learned that training matters, the fine details matter. We had a great training session Thursday night that led to the road performance we had on Friday,” DeAugustino said.
Mittendorf scored the lone goal in the 27th minute that put Waynesburg up 1-0.
“We weren’t gonna lose to them this year,” Mittendorf said. “We were so set on this goal to get a win against them.”
Mittendorf was DeAugustino’s first commit when receiving the head coaching job at Waynesburg. For DeAugustino, he is proud of Mittendorf’s performance.
“She’s one of those people that when I started here five years ago, that we were gonna build around,” DeAugustino said.
Goalkeeper Lex Greenlief shut down Baldwin Wallace with nine saves in Friday’s game.
“Defensivley we stood tall,” DeAugustino said. “Greenlief played incredibly well in the frame and made a couple big saves when she was called upon.”
Waynesburg now has four shut out wins in six games.
“I think soccer is that unique game where it’s more than just one individual that stands out,” DeAugustino said. “When we defend, it’s all 11 players that become defenders out there. It’s not just the back four and last night proved that it took all players to secure that win.”
Baldwin Wallace outshot Waynesburg with 14-13 and had more shots on goal with their 9 to Waynesburg’s 7.
“We didn’t get a lot of chances and we were able to execute and score a great goal,” DeAugustino said.
Waynesburg rises to 5-1 on the year and has one more non-conference game scheduled before Presidents’ Athletic Conference play starts. On Tuesday, Carlow comes to John. F Wiley Stadium.
“I think it shows out of the teams we played that we can bounce back really well and we’re gonna be able to deal with tough teams,” Mittendorf said.
Following that game, Waynesburg travels to Westminster on Sept. 27 to begin PAC play.
