Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team shut out the Geneva Golden Tornadoes 2-0 on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Yellow Jackets have won their last six games in a row and have clinched a playoff spot and a bye.
“It’s a really cool feeling,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “Now that we have secured a spot, now we are battling to be the top team in the conference. It’s been a goal of hours for a long time.”
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time to score. In the second minute, Miracle Hershey scored off a rebound shot that hit off the right post by Hailey Gilchrest.
“It was a great ball,” DeAugustino said. Gilchrest had a great shot there, but excellent opportunistic moment Miracle. She was ready for that game.”
In the 11th minute, Amanda Pepe sent a short pass to Julz Mohrbacher, who fired a shot to the bottom left corner of the net to put Waynesburg up 2-0.
“Our plan was to get going forward early,” Mohrbacher said. “I was proud of our consistency to drive and keep reaching our goals and not settling.”
Waynesburg finished the game with 21 shots with eight of them going on goal. Geneva had only eight shots with four shots on goal. Lex Greenlief had four saves on the night. With yesterday’s win, Waynesburg has set a record for most shut outs in a single season with 12.
“The defense, like always, is playing super solid,” Mohrbacher said. “They have been a huge part of our offensive success.”
Yesterday’s game was special for Mohrbacher, as she was able to face her sister, Renae Mohrbacher for the first time on a college field.
“It was definitely something different,” Julz Mohrbacher said. “ The last time we stepped on the field together, we were on the same team. It was amazing to see my sister back out there directing and leading her team after coming back from injury.”
DeAugustino noticed that the two Mohrbachers play a similar style of game and Julz Mohrbacher’s teammates knew how to defend Renae Mohrbacher for yesterday’s game.
“We see it everyday in practice,” DeAugustino said. “Julz loves having her back to the goal and trying to turn. Jocelyn [Stiffler] has seen the last three years, [Abby] Ngugi has seen it the last two years. They knew the battle was coming.”
Renae Mohrbacher, much like her sister, leads the team in goals with four and points with nine.
“You know when there’s a Mohrbacher up top,” DeAugustino said. “She’s going to be dynamic and she’s going to do some great things.”
Waynesburg will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 29 as they face the number one seed team in the conference, Grove City. The Wolverines are 9-0-1 with 28 points and had a 1-1 tie against the Yellow Jackets last year.
“I’m looking forward to some tough competition,” Julz Mohrbacher said. “I feel they need to be tested and we are the team to do it.”
