Women’s tennis creeps towards final matches of the season

The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team was in action against Presidents’ Athletic conference opponent Geneva college on Monday, Oct. 9. The match did not fall in the Yellow Jackets favor however, as the Golden Tornadoes won 9-0.

After their match, Head Coach Randy Petit stated, “The girls played hard. There were a number of girls playing out of their normal position and they still competed.  That was their first night match so that was a bit of an adjustment too.”

Although the match was one sided, sophomore Alli Bailey put up tremendous fight in both her doubles and singles matches.

Bailey was partnered with Aubrey Burns in her doubles match and they competed hard but fell short 8-2. As for singles, Bailey played fourth singles and had one of the best matches of the day for the Yellow Jackets, but it still was not enough as she lost 6-2, 6-2.

Bailey stated, “I was happy that I was able to hit the ball back a couple of times and score a few points.”

Another notable performance against Geneva was the number two singles spot, Julia Luzar. She had one of the best sets of the day for the yellow jackets but ultimately it was not enough as the match ended 6-4, 6-0.

Before their next match, Bailey stated, “ I’d like to improve my backhand and hit the ball back more than I did last time.”

Petit also further commented on what improvements he saw from this match, stating, “There was improvement in their net game this past week so I’d like to continue to see that improvement.”

Before their last matches of the season, Petit told his team, “Just to continue to take care of themselves away from the court as well.  There is added stress with midterms and some sickness going around.’’

As for Bailey, she said, “I’m going to rest, keep a positive attitude, and hope for the best.”

Waynesburg is in action against conference opponent Franciscan University on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. and will follow that up on Friday, Oct. 13, at home against Mount Aloysius College.
