Sara Clegg - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Women’s Tennis team, who was coming off a win against Ursuline college, secured another win yesterday, Sept. 30 against Thiel College, 6-1, snapping their 5-year Presidents’ Athletic Conference losing streak.
“Winning two matches in a row really builds our team’s confidence. We knew coming into tonight’s match that it would be a big one for us to get because it would be our first conference win in a number of years,” senior Aubrey Burns said.
The team wasted no time in doubles, taking all three matches with an identical score of 6-1. The pairs included Celeste Matsaudza and Julia Corey, Julia Luzar and Taylor Stephens, and Burns and Alli Bailey.
That momentum was carried into the single matchups. Waynesburg took five out of the six contests. Matsaudza, Stephens, Umshares, Corey, and Burns all united to account for Waynesburg’s dominance. All these girls won both of their sets.
The women even out their PCT to .500 and are now on a two-game win streak.
“This match was crucial for us- it secured our first conference win in years. Getting this win has given us more wins than we’ve had in quite some time, making a significant milestone as we continue to develop the program,” sophomore Julia Umshares said.
The women’s tennis teams steps back onto the court on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m.
