Women’s tennis falls to Geneva

Jackets still looking for first conference win

The Waynesburg women’s tennis team fell to Geneva, 8-1 Thursday afternoon. The loss drops the Jackets to 0-3 in Presidents Athletic Conference play and 1-5 overall.

“It would be nice to pull some of these out,” head  coach Ron Headlee said. “We’re getting there, but just couldn’t quite get it done.”

During the frustrating afternoon, Headlee saw an early moment as one that greatly impacted how the day unfolded.

“We had a chance to win in the first doubles (match) and were up 6-5,” he said. “It wasn’t errors from our girls, but Geneva made two really good shots. We ended up losing that one, and I thought that was a big turning point.”

Despite a few close scores, Geneva swept Waynesburg in five of its six singles matches. Lauren Wadsworth was the only Yellow Jacket to win a set in singles, doing so in the first of three against Geneva’s Emily Grove.

The third doubles match was where the Jackets collected their only win of the day. Hayley Sweeney and Noelle Hughes put together an 8-6 win. Headlee was pleased by their performance.

“Noelle and Haley haven’t really lost in their third doubles matches,” Headlee said. “Those two have been playing really well there, and I was very happy with the way they played.”

As the season moves forward, Headlee considers his team’s ability to adapt to competition as the biggest area to improve upon.

“We’re still playing their game a little bit,” Headlee. “We aren’t adjusting to what other teams are doing, and we’re still learning to do that.”

Waynesburg will return to action Sunday, with a home match against Penn State Altoona. The Lions play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, and have an overall record of 3-7 this season. It’ll begin at 1:30 p.m.
