For the Yellow Jacket

The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team opened up its season with a convincing 8-1 win over Pitt-Greensburg.

Now, The Yellow Jackets are gearing up to begin Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Thursday, Sept. 12 against the Westminster Titans in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Westminster [4-0] is already off to a hot start to the season after finishing second in the PAC a year ago. Women’s head tennis coach Ron Headlee understands that playing Westminster will be a difficult match.

“They were just dominating on their part last year,” he said.

For Headlee, The biggest difference from his Yellow Jacket squad from last season to this year is depth throughout the lineup.

“We have two freshmen playing right away, a sophomore who is playing number one, and then the other three seniors that are playing right now.” Headlee said. “So, it’s definitely more depth on the team and then numbers five to nine are all about pretty even. Someone can step in and play pretty close to the other person.”

One of the freshmen Headlee mentioned was Madison Trent, who played in the number two spot against Pitt-Greensburg. Headlee also expects a lot more out of his team this year after going 2-9 in 2018.

“I’m hoping this year we will be competitive with most of the teams,” he said.  “Just based on our practices and things I’m not sure we’re going to win all those matches but, I think we will be in those matches and that’s a big step. Those are the steps we are looking to take this year. We set a team goal to have five wins and hopefully two or three of them are in PAC play this year.”

The women will open conference play with the Titans today at 4 p.m.
