Women’s Tennis rallies for two more wins

Over the weekend, the Waynesburg University women’s tennis team faced off against two more nonconference opponents. The women came out of this stretch with two more wins. This marks the first time since 2014 that the women have won three straight matches. These two wins came against Carlow University and Mount Aloysius College. Both opponents hail from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Waynesburg has now improved to 3-1 to start the season. This is also the first time since 2014 that the team has finished its first four matches with that record.

Junior Julia Umshares and freshman Gabby Peiritsh both finished 6-0 during the three-game winning streak. The doubles partners won all of their doubles matches as well as each of their own singles matches. These performances earned Umshares Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) player of the week.

“Julia is such a blessing to have on our team. She is so consistent with her approach and with her game. She is a lead by example type of player,” head coach Randy Pettit said.

The team played on two straight days and had to prepare for what that would look like.

“I tried to make sure I was getting enough rest and drank plenty of water since we had matches on back-to-back days,” Umshares said.

After taking these big wins, Waynesburg is already ready to look forward and make improvements.

“I can improve on being more consistent and staying confident throughout the entire match. I also want to work on limiting small mistakes and playing smarter points,” Umshares said.

Coach Pettit is ready to prepare his team for the current leader in the PAC standings.

“Grove City is a great team. We will prepare as we have with others adding in some work for their style of play,” Pettit said.

Waynesburg will go on the road to face Grove City College. The team looks to begin their conference play 1-0. This match will be on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 12 p.m.
