Women’s Wrestling earns first win in team history

On Nov. 7, Waynesburg University Women’s Wrestling team hosted their first home match of the season in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. They kicked off the night and picked up their first win in team history, 30-24. This also marked head coach Karli Thomas’ first win as head coach of the program.

“If I’m honest, there were a lot of mixed emotions,” Thomas said. “We did win the match as a team which was a super cool experience. Overall, I saw improvement since our meet on November 2nd which I was happy to see.”

Waynesburg picked up wins in the 110, 117, 138, 108 and 207-pound weight classes. Freshman Anastasia Curitti picked up her second career colligate win after pinning her opponent in one minute and twenty-six seconds.

“It was very exciting to pick up my second win in front of our home crowd,” Curitti said. “I went into the duel and match itself very surrendered about the outcome but with a strong desire to win.”

Coach Thomas praised Curitti’s performance.

“Anastasia’s performance showed that she isn’t afraid of challenges and doesn’t count herself out regardless of the circumstances,” Thomas said. “She made a few adjustments after studying film from her previous matches from JCU paid off.”

Curitti talked about her focus heading into the team’s next match.

“Win or lose, every day, every practice and every match is a new one, so I don’t focus too heavily on what my record is or who my opponent is,” Curitti said. “I will remain surrendered to the outcome God has planned, confident in the work I have put in, and excited for the privilege to compete alongside my teammates.”

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Pitt Johnstown for their second team match of the season on Nov. 12. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
