Thacker’s introduction to collegiate T&F and the season less than three months away

The Waynesburg University indoor track & field season starts with their first meet on Friday, Dec. 6, at Youngstown State University, with there looking to be 20 to 30 teams at the meet.

From there, they will return from winter break to their meet right back to YSU on Saturday, Feb. 1.  On Saturday, Feb. 8, they will travel to Denison University for a smaller meet that looks to have six to eight teams.

On Feb. 15th they will be at Akron University, which is not only a new meet this year and it could also be their biggest with 25 to 30 teams. The Presidents Athletic Conference Championships are on Thursday, Feb. 27, at YSU.  On March 8, there is an individual last chance meet to try to get athletes to break a record or get them to nationals.  Indoor track & field nationals are on March 14 and 15.

Head Coach Chris Hardie elaborated on his individual expectations for every meet.  Specifically speaking on his expectations for the meet on Dec. 6.

“It is like an end of semester championship meet for everyone who has been working hard all semester. I want them to shake off the rust and figure out how good they can be,”  Hardie said.

Everyone except for distance runners will go because according to Hardie, the distance runners need a couple weeks off following the cross country season.  Regarding Feb.1, he said, “The distance runners need to get used to running on a 300 meter track and everyone else needs to keep improving.”  For every other meet until PAC Championships, Hardie noted how everyone needs to keep improving and pushing themselves

“They need to have personal best, records and to score the most amount of points possible,”  Hardie said regarding the expectation in a last chance meet.

Kevin Thacker, who is the resident director of Martin Hall and a new coach to  the indoor and outdoor staff, commented on his experience of coaching from high school to college.

“The track practice schedule in college is a lot easier because high school you only have one set time you can practice and in college once you learn everyone schedules you can work with people at different time,” Thacker said. “The Indoor track schedule is easier because in high school, you have to go to two or three meets a week and in college you only have one meet a week.”

When it comes to expectations, Thacker sees it as a learning experience for all parties. “The first indoor meet will be learning what a college meet is like with different events than high school and getting nerves out. every meet except PAC championships is improving every week.”   Thacker mentioned one of his expectations for PAC championships is, “To have the best throws crew in the PAC, I want Jacob Harker to break the shot put record.”
