Sara Clegg - The Yellow Jacket Yesterday, the Waynesburg University softball team clinched a spot in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Tournament with a 5-3 victory in game two of a home doubleheader against Saint Vincent College.
In game two, senior catcher Braylee Corbin broke the Waynesburg University single-season home run record with her eighth blast of the year.
“I honestly did not know I was in the running,” Corbin said. “I always try to hit the ball hard somewhere, and sometimes they carry over the fence.”
The Yellow Jackets dropped game one 7-6 by letting the lead slip away late. In game two, however, the Yellow Jackets shut down a Saint Vincent late comeback attempt.
“We did not do the little things in the first game,” head coach Chris Brunson said. “Sometimes the kids wake up after a loss. They made the adjustment and decided we weren’t going to lose game two.”
While freshman pitcher Morgan Walt walked her individual single-game high number of batters (7), she still managed to throw a complete game, allowing just the three runs en route to the win.
“I went out to her a couple of times late and kind of read her the riot act a little bit,” Brunson said. “She got ahead and did enough for us to get the last six outs of the game and get into the playoffs.”
Seven different Jacket hitters had an RBI in the doubleheader. Sophomore infielder Rylee Rohbeck and Corbin batted in runs in both games, with each posting a home run.
The Yellow Jackets wrap up the home portion of their regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader against non-conference PSU Behrend before traveling to Westminster College on Saturday for the regular season finale.
“Both teams lead their conference, so those are four games that are really going to tune you up for the playoffs,” Brunson said. “Hopefully we answer the bell.”
Corbin thinks the team will have what they need moving forward.
“Everyone is coming together,” Corbin said. “The game one loss was kind of a hiccup, but there is confidence moving forward.”
Tomorrow’s first pitch against PSU Behrend is scheduled for 3 p.m.
