24-hour-printer to arrive on campus

The days of students waiting in the morning for the library to open to print a paper that took all night to write are soon going to be over at Waynesburg University. The Student Senate’s proposed idea of having a 24 hour printer available in the Stover Campus Center has been approved and will soon be available for student use.

Elliott Kimball, chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, said the date the printing center will be up and running for students is still a little up in the air.

“In the COVID-19 world, unexpected circumstances arise all the time that demand the attention of the administration,” Kimball said. “We are hopeful that the printer will be installed sometime shortly after fall break.”

The push to have a printer available for students all day and night is the result of the student body’s concern about the limited hours of the Eberly Library printers and their availability.

“In the fall of 2020, a few different students spoke to members of the Academic Affairs Committee and expressed a desire for 24 hour printing on campus,” Kimball said. “Our committee crafted a poll to be sent out to the student body in an attempt to gage the interest level of adding a 24 hour printer to campus. The results showed that students would benefit from a 24 hour printer if it was available, so our committee deemed this was a cause worth investing our time and resources into.”

During the approval process, Waynesburg’s Student Senate was challenged with deciding how to fund this project. After talking to administration it was decided that the university would cover the entire price of the project.

The location of the printer was another challenge that the Student Senate had to face. The printing area is going to be set up next to the security office on the first floor of the Stover Campus Center. This area will include a computer and two printers for students to use at any time during the night or day.

The 24 hour available printers will be free of charge for students at Waynesburg. These printers  will match those  in the Eberly Library by printing in black and white ink.

Student Senate President, Luke Diel expressed that though the process may have taken longer than students were expecting, the Senate is grateful to have been able to fulfil the needs of students and their desire to have 24 hour availability to a printer.

“It may have been a little bit longer than students would have liked, but unfortunately that’s just how everything works, it’s not always a fast paced move,” Diel said. “We are blessed that the administration took the concern very seriously and were willing to work with us on the project.”
