WPIAL Football Championships: How do they work?

This Saturday, the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League will kick off its high school football championships with the 4A and 6A title games, which will be played at Norwin High School. Meanwhile, the WPIAL championship games for the other classifications – 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A – are scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Acrisure Stadium, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Scott Seltzer, executive director of the WPIAL, is confident that Norwin will continue to host WPIAL football championship games.

“As of right now, yes,” Seltzer said when asked if Norwin will hold championships in future years. “Norwin is a pretty good venue because it has good seating capacity and locker rooms. We feel they do a really good job hosting our championships.”

Seltzer explained the cycle that the WPIAL goes through and why the 4A and 6A championships are a week earlier than the other classifications.

“Our schedule is all based off of the PIAA schedule. That’s been the protocol for years,” Seltzer said. “For these two years, 4A and 6A enter the PIAA tournament in the quarterfinals, where our 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A teams enter at the semifinals.”

Class 4A and 6A will enter the PIAA quarterfinal round on Nov. 22-23, while classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A enter the semifinal round on Nov. 29-30.

The most recent cycle, which ended at the conclusion of the 2023 season, had 5A and 6A entering the quarterfinals.

The 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A WPIAL championships on Nov. 23, at Acrisure Stadium will all be televised on KDKA+.

“We’re excited to extend our weekly coverage of high school football on television and our social media platforms into the WPIAL playoffs,” Dan Rooney, the Steelers’ director of business development and strategy, said in a statement. “Extending into the postseason allows more people the ability to watch more high school football games and also further celebrate the young athletes in our region.”

“We are excited to bring the WPIAL Championships that will be played at Acrisure Stadium back to television,” Rooney said in a separate statement. “This provides another platform to spotlight and celebrate the young athletes who play the game of football in Western Pennsylvania. We’d like to thank our partners who helped make this possible.”

The slate for Nov. 23, at Acrisure Stadium is to be determined, but all the championship matchups will be set after this Friday, Nov. 15.

McKeesport will try to take down top-seeded Thomas Jefferson in the 4A championship this Saturday at Norwin. That game is followed by a third straight 6A championship meeting between North Allegheny and Central Catholic.
