Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket It goes without saying that when your team is in the offseason with the season coming up, you want your players in peak condition. Head coach Tim Fusina has his players lifting and running but under NCAA rules. Fusina and assistant coach Zach Stevens are not allowed to be there.
“We do lifting, we’re running. Guys are playing, but under NCAA rules we’re not allowed to be there with them,” Fusina said.
The team has been doing their conditioning with the strength coach. They have also been playing at times that they can but with the NCAA rules, basketball coaches are not allowed to watch.
When asked when would the first practice be for the team, Fusina mentioned a rule change in the NCAA playing and practice rules.
“Well, NCAA Division III changed their playing and practice rules a couple years ago,” Fusina said. “You’re now allowed eight days prior to the beginning of your season to work with your team. The first day of official practice for basketball is Oct. 15.”
That practice is the start of the road before their first game on Nov. 7 in Hamburg, New York for the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament.
Transitioning from high school to college is not easy for everyone, but freshman Tyler Walls from Scott High School in Madison, West Virginia feels Waynesburg has made the transition easy for him and has helped grow his faith.
“As a freshman I have noticed this school does a lot for us. They want us to succeed here, and allow us to grow not only as people but in our faith as well,” Walls said. “They have made the transition so smooth, and allowed me to understand what it takes to be successful in college.”
Walls has learned some new things like how to manage his time better, how to be a better person, and how to grow up as he is away from home.
Being part of the team Walls has been working out with the team during their workouts and team runs. He spoke a little bit about his expectations for the team.
“I obviously expect good things from the team. As I am a freshman, I think we look good. I am excited for the upcoming season; I can’t wait to experience college basketball.”
Walls and the team will have their first official practice on Oct. 15.
